About Jack Frederick

As of the fall of 2024, Jack has been studying composition at the New England Conservatory, where his current private instructor is Michael Gandolfi. Since beginning his studies at NEC, he has been selected a winner of the annual “Honors Ensemble Composition Competition,” as well as being named a fellow twice by the school’s CEPS department. Jack has been selected to participate in a choir which gave the American premiere of Sibelius’ opera, “The Maiden in the Tower.” Jack’s participation in NEC’s symphonic choir let to performances of Brahms’ Requiem, as well as Durufle’s Requiem. He has participated in masterclasses with composer Christian Wolff.
 

In the summer of 2025, Jack will be attending the Arts Letters and Numbers Artists Residency, which will culminate in a community exhibition around his works. Afterwards, he will attend the High Score festival in northern Italy.

In the Summer of 2024, Jack attended the Boston Conservatory at Berklee’s HSCI Program for 2 weeks as a composition major. While there, he studied with Dr. LJ White, Gleb Kanasevich, and Dr. Victoria Cheah. During these 2 weeks, he wrote a solo piano piece, a saxophone/vibraphone duet, and a string quartet, all of which received a live performance.

Jack Frederick’s musical journey began with picking up the alto saxophone in 6th grade. He began jazz lessons in 10th grade, along with his first attempts at composition. By the end of 11th grade, he had written his High School’s Alma Mater, a song to accompany a student film, and a transcription of a Micheal Buble song. All of the following have been performed by the school’s Wind Ensemble. For a number of months in the spring of 2023, Jack studied privately with Dr. Sean Friar, head of composition at Lamont School of Music.

 In the Summer of 2023, Jack attended the Brevard Music Festival for 6 weeks as a composition major. While there, he studied with Dr. Robert Aldridge, Dr. David Dzubay, and had private lessons with Dr. Greg Simon. During this time, Jack composed a solo piano piece, a piece for saxophone quartet, and a piece for symphonic band, all of which received a live performance. Participation in the Choir resulted in a concert of Verdi’s requiem to close out the season.

 Beginning in the fall of 2023, Jack attends Interlochen Arts Academy. He has composed numerous pieces for various instrumentation, all receiving live performances. At Interlochen, he studies composition privately with Dr. Cynthia Van Maanen, as well as having recieved masterclasses hosted by The Imani Winds, Joan Tower, Patrice Rushen, Bill Banfield, and others. He also studies private saxophone performance with Dr. Matthew Schlomer. Although a composition major, Jack plays Tenor saxophone 1 in both the Interlochen Wind Ensemble and Interlochen Jazz Orchestra.

Awards & Recognitions

  • For the summer of 2025, Jack will be staying at Arts, Letters, and Numbers’ residency program outside of Albany, NY. This program will culminate in a community performance where Jack shares his work about music and the environment.

  • During the 2024-2025 school year, Jack was selected as a winner in the school’s annual honors ensemble competition. This resulted in a performance of a string quartet titled “Look Up” in Jordan Hall by the Calandra quartet.

  • In the 2024-2025 school year, jack was named a fellow by NEC’s CEPS department. Jack received a fellowship through the “Community Fellowship” and the “Ensemble Fellowship”. Both of which result in numerous community performances per semester.

  • Jack Frederick has been in the Boy Scouts of America program since the Age of 5. In the Fall of 2023, he earned the rank of Eagle scout. Additionally, he earned 3 palms along with this rank, and was his troop’s Order of the Arrow representative. Within his troop, he held every leadership position.

  • As a part of a grant given to members of Interlochen’s brass faculty, new pieces were created for brass trio. Jack’s piece was chosen to be a concert opener for these faculty members, which was performed on 04-27-2024 in Traverse City, MI.
